The Sophisticated Marketer’s Podcast: Virtual Reality, Creativity, and Heavy Metal with Mary Spio

How many marketers do you know that are also literally rocket scientists? If you do know any, how many of them also work with one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time?

As far as I know there’s only one person that fits the description: Mary Spio. Her resume includes Satellite Applications Engineer for Intelsat and Head of Satellite Communications Systems for Boeing. Now she works with CEEK VR, the company behind Megadeth’s first-of-its-kind virtual reality experience.

I became aware of Mary through her work with Megadeth. Then I read her book, It’s Not Rocket Science: 7 Game-Changing Traits for Uncommon Success, and it blew the top of my head off. Her take on creativity and innovation has the potential to be life-changing.

So I was excited when she agreed to sit down and chat for this episode of the Sophisticated Marketer’s Podcast. Join us as we talk about the potential of VR for marketing, entertainment, and even saving lives.

Listen in on the Conversation as Mary and I Discuss:

The Role of VR in the Future of the Web: For Mary, VR is the natural next iteration of the entire web. We had text and pictures, then video, now VR is the “third coming of the web,” as she puts it.

Closing the Gap between 360 Video and Pure VR: Right now there’s a major difference between VR & 360 video. Mary explains how we might blend the two for more powerful experiences.

How VR Can Save Lives: Mary explains how a VR application trained her 5-year-old to do CPR, and discusses the implications across industries.

The Challenge Marketers Must Overcome to Rock VR: One of the next frontiers in VR is making it less of an isolating, solo experience, Mary says. She explains the hurdles for social VR and how we might jump over them.

The Role of Creativity in Technology: Marketing is a creative and technological profession. We tend to view those two characteristics as distinct from each other. For Mary, technological innovation actually is a form of creativity.

The Need to Develop New Forms of Storytelling: When your customer is free to explore the world you’re building, we need to evolve beyond linear storytelling. Mary talks about building interactive stories that don’t rely on a limited point of view.

Talking with Mary, and seeing what she’s doing with CEEK VR, makes me very excited to see the next evolution of VR technology. With creative minds like hers driving innovation, the future’s looking bright.
