Ann Handley’s inspiration from the festive shopping queue
I’m proud and privileged to have had Ann Handley as a mentor – and this final episode in our festive marketing playlist shows why

I’m immensely proud and blessed to have had Ann Handley as a mentor. The author of Everybody Writes and Content Rules is one of the best writers I know, one of the best content marketers I know, and one of the best people I know. I set huge stall by her advice. And so when Ann found herself stuck in the shopping line waiting to buy food for Thanksgiving, and decided to spend the time putting together 30 pieces of career advice for young women I had to take notice.
Okay, so I’m not young and I’m not a woman – but this advice is still relevant and resonant enough to make it my favourite post of 2017. I had my 3-year-old daughter Penelope in mind when I read the piece, and couldn’t help thinking how important this kind of advice will be for young people looking to navigate the careers of the future. However, it’s just as relevant for somewhat older professionals (both male and female) looking to navigate the careers of today. Like most things that Ann writes, it’s smart, concise, funny and empowering. And it celebrates the essential human capabilities that both she and I believe will continue to be valued no matter what Artificial Intelligence (AI) throws our way in the future.
It was great fun to read Ann’s post as the final, bonus entry in our festive marketing playlist. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series of top marketing influencers reading top marketing thought leadership as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together. I’d like to take this chance to with all of our blog readers a very, very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Listening to these eight minutes of inspiration from Ann Handley will definitely help with both!
