She continues to be inspired by her role at Microsoft which has seen her build a global diversity strategy for hiring key diverse talent across the business.
After experiencing the alienation of being the only female student in her Computer Science classes, Alexa decided to start Codess in March 2013 – a community for female coders, sponsored by Microsoft. Only 18% of Computer Science graduates are Women and that number drops dramatically when we look at the number of Women who progress into engineering careers. Alexa created Codess to inspire Women to achieve their professional goals and continue advancing technically, whilst providing them a qualified network. Research confirms that technology companies with more Women in management have a 34% higher return on investments. Therefore Codess endeavors to change the future of the engineering profession by impacting the number of females visible at the leadership level. Since inception, Codess has grown into a global initiative servicing 10 countries worldwide such as India, Romania, Estonia, Stockholm and the US.
Through effective thought-leadership, Alexa has enabled Microsoft to reach new diverse markets, produce more culturally attuned products and has broadened the recognition of Microsoft as a diverse employer.
