Making content that engages an audience requires creativity and inspiration. Which is why even the most experienced content creator occasionally gets stuck with a blank screen. You can’t just flip a switch to turn on the creativity, or summon a bolt of inspiration from a clear blue sky. Creative ideas need time and space to grow.

It’s not just content creation that requires creativity, either. For example, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner schedules two hours of empty space on his calendar a day; he knows that time spent in creative thought will pay off in the long run.

We can’t all have a tiny house just for writing, like Ann does (although if you can swing it, you definitely should build one). But every marketer can and should take time out of the day—even if it’s just a few minutes—to get away from the desk, away from distractions, and into creative thinking mode.
