Recruiting, Transformation – and Phil Collins

Change. It surrounds us daily. Evolution. It's the natural order of things. For some, however, change can prompt feelings of uncertainty and reluctance--in spite of the short and long-term benefits that can be reaped.

“Uncertain” best describes my frame of mind as I recall my initial perception of LinkedIn as a potential tool for recruiters in 2005. At that time, LinkedIn was one of a handful of web-based professional networking sites used to manage business contacts. With MySpace dominating the social networking scene (imagine!), LinkedIn played second fiddle to the ever popular and growing social meet-up and networking online site.

As hard to believe as it may seem now, many still had not heard of LinkedIn as a dynamic business networking tool. I had established a LinkedIn account two years prior, and I was guarded yet cautiously optimistic about the tool. I thought it had the potential to be a one-of-a-kind approach to talent sourcing by taking a forward-thinking concept of reaching out to applicants who didn't necessarily want to be found.

A couple of years later, it truly was by chance that I stumbled across LinkedIn Recruiter. What a discovery! In a handful of weeks I realized that I had just added a unique tool to my recruiting arsenal, giving my team and me a huge advantage over our industry counterparts and cutting recruiting expenses almost in half.
