The horror genre is having a renaissance right now, raking in hundreds of millions at the multiplex and dominating streaming services. As we get closer to Halloween, it’s a good time to ask: Why do we like to be scared?
One reason is that horror takes our deepest fears — fear of death, fear of loss, fear of the unknown — and gives them a concrete form. A form that can be faced, fought and defeated (until the inevitable sequel). Watching the struggle onscreen can help us feel better equipped to take on our fears in real life.
There are plenty of nebulous fears haunting marketers right now: fear of AI taking over, of social media algorithms, of content left to rot unseen by a target audience.
