It’s possible to have a career in sales without really loving it. But it’s easier to have a long and successful career if you have a passion for it. We asked five experts in the profession what first attracted them to sales and why they grew to love it. These are their love stories:
“I fell in love with the sales profession because of the freedom, flexibility, daily learning and unlimited earning power. The more I put into it, the more I was rewarded. Though some people still have a bias towards people in sales, the truth is that good salespeople are focused on helping buyers solve their business problems. They approach the sales process from the perspective of giving not getting. When you focus on serving others, people naturally want to do business with you. I learn something every day, and I love that no two days are ever the same!“
Barbara Giamanco, President and Social Selling Advisor of Social Centered Selling and co-author of The New Handshake: Sales Meets Social Media
"Initially I fell in love with sales because of financial gain. I had never had a job that paid ‘extra’ based on performance and when I received my first commission check I quickly realized my effectiveness could supplement my income. Over the years my love for sales evolved and the financial gain was less important. I felt a great deal of pride in the fact I was helping companies make decisions on products that could make them more efficient. This is what led me into social selling. That led me into focusing on the sales profession. My real love of sales lives with the individual sales rep. Being able to help them understand how to be better at their jobs by leveraging social media has been one of the most rewarding adventures I’ve gone on.“
Koka Sexton, Group Manager, Content and Social Marketing at LinkedIn
“I fell in love with sales because I love to both meet new people and learn new things from people that I've met. Social media has now amplified the potential that selling gives me because I can meet and network with people 24/7 around the globe without even leaving my own home. Social media and sales is as natural a combination as can be because you can't sell without being social!”
Neal Schaffer, Founder of Maximize Your Social, Maximize Social Business, and Social Media Center of Excellence
“It's time to put the sexy back in to selling! For me the ability to build long lasting relationships that build into true friendships is what made me fall in love with sales.”
Julio Viskovich, Director of Marketing at rFactr
“Sales seduced me. I never expected to like it. It had a bad reputation and I didn’t want to be seen as one of “those kind” of people. It didn’t take me long, though, to discover that my perception was totally inaccurate.
But love? I was ultimately hooked by its never-ending challenges. I was always looking for ways to be better at prospecting, engaging people, eliminating obstacles, handling complex decisions and beating tough competitors.
Every day was a puzzle that needed solving. I immersed myself in learning, experimented with new approaches and analyzed the results. The better I got, the more my clients loved working with me. The bigger paychecks were frosting on the cake.
How can you not fall in love with a job like that?”
