What does a chief marketing officer do?

A chief marketing officer (CMO) plays a crucial role in refining the marketing excellence of an organisation. They are tasked with developing, implementing and executing strategic marketing plans to drive revenue generation and enhance brand awareness.

A CMO meticulously understands the target audience, market dynamics and competitive landscape to craft compelling marketing collaterals that communicate the brand's value proposition. They possess a deep understanding of the consumer landscape, the ability to navigate cultural nuances and the vision to create impactful marketing strategies that drive business growth.

In order to do this, the chief marketing officer develops and oversees the execution of annual marketing plans, tracking campaigns and activities to ensure desired results. They also provide strategic direction for product positioning, pricing strategies and marketing communication to drive customer acquisition, retention and loyalty.

Being senior-level executives, CMOs are also responsible for building and nurturing relationships with business partners, vendors, media outlets and other stakeholders to facilitate effective collaborations and maximise brand exposure.

The role of a CMO is distinct in the scope of work of a digital marketer. While the CMO oversees the overall marketing strategy, the digital marketer specialises in utilising digital channels and tactics. Also, CMO is a senior-level role as compared to a digital marketer.

In India, a CMO is also known as a chief brand officer and chief marketing & communications officer. As their career progresses, they can move to roles like marketing director, managing direction (specialising in marketing) and vice president of marketing.
