What does a GIS analyst do?

A geographic information system analyst, or GIS analyst works at the intersection of cartography, data analysis and programming. They primarily work with spatial data, wherein they analyse it through mapping. A GIS expert deals with map-making and software development. They oversee, understand and deliver geographic trends to their employers. Both fieldwork and report generation are integral parts of a GIS analyst’s job role. While working with geospatial information, a GIS analyst often manages a digital library of geographical maps, that they manipulate and access with the use of some tools they develop.

You might hire a GIS analyst to:

  • Implement spatial analysis such as distance calculations and spatial overlays
  • Report to senior geospatial analysts about their findings
  • Develop mapping applications and similar tools regarding geographical mapping
  • Analyse and write reports on spatial data as a geodata analyst
  • Adapt physical maps into digitally storable versions
  • Design accurate and reliable map layouts as per the standard templates
