What does a chemical engineer do?
Chemical engineers design, develop, and optimise processes for chemical manufacturing. They apply principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals and biochemicals.
These professionals help companies improve product quality, reduce costs and minimise environmental impact. Their ability to innovate and optimise processes contributes to the competitive advantage of businesses across various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and food processing.
The primary responsibilities and role of chemical engineers are to develop new industrial processes, design and test equipment and oversee the operation and maintenance of chemical plants. These professionals work closely with other engineers and scientists to ensure that processes run smoothly, safely and efficiently.
In a similar job role, process engineers focus on designing and optimising the industrial processes within the same industry and materials engineers focus on developing and testing materials used in chemical manufacturing. They often work with chemical engineers who handle chemical materials, reactions and processes.
