CASE STUDY
YoY growth in learning hours
Caregivers now have on-demand opportunities to increase their skills through training courses with LinkedIn Learning
Emotional intelligence is the #1 most-viewed topic, critical to helping doctors and nurses best serve patients
"We want every Sutter Health employee to grow their career here. LinkedIn Learning makes that possible by bringing accessible learning directly into the flow of our work."
Carole Bennett, VP of Talent Management, Sutter Health
THE CHALLENGE
Sutter Health is a not-for-profit integrated healthcare system operating 24/7 to serve 3.6 million patients. Sutter’s team of 80,000 employees, clinicians and physicians live Sutter’s mission of "caring for our patients first and our people always.” The system's strategy, known as Destination 2030, calls for a capable, nimble workforce that can grow their skills and advance their career within the organization.
Three pressures made this workforce strategy urgent:
Sutter’s talent team was not resourced to scale live, instructor-led training for a 24/7 workforce, including nurses working nights and weekends and physicians building skills in the minutes between seeing patients.
THE SOLUTION
LinkedIn Learning met Sutter Health's workforce needs with always-on skill-building, AI-powered practice and Workday integration. This gives every employee access to learning that tracks automatically and reinforces insights from speakers, managers and learning cohort programs.
Sutter Health uses LinkedIn Learning’s AI-powered role-play as a development tool to help employees practice giving and receiving feedback and navigating career conversations. The tool provides a supportive environment for employees across clinical and nonclinical roles to build confidence and strengthen communication skills. To date, more than 1,500 unique learners have completed over 3,100 role-play conversations.
Across Sutter, LinkedIn Learning courses appear directly in Workday's learning catalog, helping employees access learning without having to change platforms. Course completions are automatically tracked in Workday transcripts, giving leaders clear visibility into the skills their teams are building.
Within the first three months, more than 1,800 nurses accessed learning eligible for Continuing Education through LinkedIn Learning. The Chief Nurse Officer announced the program from the main stage at Sutter Health's Nursing Symposium. 400+ employees are already taking CEUs from Project Management Institute-eligible courses.
THE RESULTS
Across a 24/7 workforce, Sutter Health is putting LinkedIn Learning's biggest promises to the test. Trusted credentialed experts are reaching nurses between shifts. AI-powered practice is helping build the human skills clinicians may not have learned in a classroom. And caregivers are moving into roles they previously didn’t know existed.
Three months after Sutter Health introduced nursing Continuing Education Units (CEUs), 1,800+ nurses had earned credits, many between shifts on nights and weekends. Another 400+ employees are working toward Project Management Institute credentials. After the Chief Nurse Officer announced the program at Sutter Health's Nursing Symposium, the number of active learners began to climb significantly.
"AI-powered role-play gives employees a lower-risk environment to practice challenging conversations before applying those skills on the job."
— Matthew Sederquist, Director of Professional Development, Sutter Health University
Sutter Health embeds AI-powered role play into every performance review cycle and its Courageous Conversations course. To date, 1,500+ unique learners have logged 3,100+ practice conversations. Year-over-year hours on LinkedIn Learning are up 32%, and emotional intelligence is now the #1 most-viewed topic across the system — critical to helping doctors and nurses best serve patients.
"People stop me all the time to say, 'LinkedIn Learning was so helpful, and I can find it so easily."
— Carole Bennett, VP of Talent Management, Sutter Health
Course completions are recorded in Workday, helping employees maintain a consolidated learning record and providing authorized leaders with appropriate visibility into completed development. Across Sutter Health, 64% of learners engage with leadership and management content, building skills for roles they aspire to. And active LinkedIn Learning users at Sutter Health are now 2x as likely to move into a new role within Sutter.
"Offering LinkedIn Learning is one more way that we’re investing in our nurses by removing barriers and meeting them where they are. Ultimately, LinkedIn Learning broadens our investment in our nurses and translates to better care for the communities we serve.”
— Carole Bennett, VP of Talent Management, Sutter Health
