Jobs on the Rise
This is a special edition of the LinkedIn Emerging Jobs report that more closely represents the rapidly-changing world we’re living in as a result of COVID-19. Instead of looking at how the jobs landscape has changed over the past 5 years - as we have done in years past - this year, we looked at the roles experiencing the highest growth between April to October 2020, compared to the previous year. We then curated that data into 15 job categories ranked by a combination of growth and size of the demand.
We’ve called these categories ‘Jobs on the Rise’ because, while the shifting landscape over the past year has resulted in significant job losses, we’ve also seen a rise in job categories in direct response to changing consumer behaviour and business needs.
In this special edition we’ll take a look at these categories, the skills needed, where the jobs are located, and insights into career paths. This will help talent professionals, job seekers, and employers get ready for what comes next, whether it’s forming a hiring strategy for the year ahead, or learning new skills to pivot into a new profession.
Spotlight
The past year has truly shown us how skills can be transferred into new career paths - we’ve seen Software Engineers become Teaching Assistants, Chief Executive Officers become Strategic Advisors, and Business Owners become Life Coaches. We also saw E-Commerce hires grow by 101%, which correlates with the growth we’ve seen in other categories, such as Social Media and Digital Marketing, and Data & Analytics.
Market stat
Looking at the data this year, one interesting take-away is the roles with the majority of female hires (88% Professional and Personal Coaches, 78% Specialised Medical Professionals, 74% Healthcare Supporting Staff) involved more human interaction and frontline support, whereas the roles with the majority of male hires (71% Technology, 68% Manufacturing, 65% Data & Analytics) were more operational and behind-the-scenes.
As we look ahead to 2021, here are the top 15 job categories driving the job market forward:

Of the 10 million people in Sweden, over 80% (8.1 million) regularly shop online. Therefore, major retailers like IKEA and ICA Gruppen were already well-placed to handle the spike in online shopping during the pandemic, and onboarded thousands of E-Commerce workers – from Package Handlers through to Supply Chain Specialists – to help get products into the hands of customers. Hiring for these roles grew by 101% between 2019 and 2020.

Methodology
Jobs on the Rise are defined as the career categories that have seen the highest year-on-year growth rates in hiring, looking at the April 2020 to October 2020 timeframe. LinkedIn’s Economic Graph data scientists looked across 15,000+ job titles to uncover the jobs that have grown the most compared to 2019 levels, those titles were then grouped into overarching career trends that capture as many as 25 job titles within each category. Career trends are ranked using a combination of year-over-year growth rate combined with the raw size of the job demand.
