Iberdrola re-energises their workforce with LinkedIn Learning

SUCCESS STORY

With more than 170 years of history, Iberdrola is now a global clean energy leader and one of the top three electricity companies in the world by market capitalisation. The group supplies energy to nearly 100 million people across five continents, has assets in excess of €150 billion, and employs more than 42,000 people globally.

Iberdrola will invest €41 billion and hire 10,000 people by 2026 to accelerate electrification. The company’s strategic pillars focus on networks, geographical diversification, and a balanced energy and customers mix. The electrification of energy is unstoppable and will expand exponentially in the years ahead, supporting decarbonisation, boosting energy security, and reducing the volatility caused by fossil fuels.

This rapid growth requires the right tools and resources to ensure the transition can be managed efficiently. The company pinpointed the need for a universal solution that would allow them to develop and deliver a roadmap of learning capacities, track learners’ progress, and meet all of their global and local learning requirements.

THE CHALLENGE

Creating a standardised learning experience for employees around the world

Creating standardised learning paths for such a large global workforce is a complex and time-consuming task. Iberdrola required a learning solution that provided them with a wealth of content and a wide range of topics for their employees to explore, while also aligning with individual job roles and locations. Another challenge to address was implementing a culture of proactive learning—something that could only be achieved through a platform that was easy for learners to navigate, grow their skills, and relish new and exciting content.

THE SOLUTION

Adopting LinkedIn Learning to provide employees with curated learning paths

After conducting market research and having trialled other learning platforms, Iberdrola identified LinkedIn Learning as the perfect platform to meet their needs. Employees really appreciated the large catalogue of LinkedIn Learning’s courses, available in a variety of lengths, which allowed staff to design bespoke development plans for their own needs. Whether they had 15 minutes or 30 hours to spend on learning, there was always educational content available to them when needed. This was important to Iberdrola as they looked to develop their employee’s critical skills and reduce their time to market. The wide range of courses offered in multiple languages was another great benefit to Iberdrola. Having content available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, allowed them to reach more employees in countries where they operate. Overall, employees reacted very positively to LinkedIn Learning, with an initial activation rate of 98%.

In order to ensure a smooth transition across many countries, Iberdrola’s rollout of LinkedIn Learning was delivered in several phases. They first shared localised information with employees from different markets so that the global workforce knew exactly what was required of them once the platform launched. The LinkedIn Learning team then organised meetings, training sessions, and webinars to introduce the platform to Iberdrola’s learners, provide some top tips, and offer additional support where needed.

Once set up, Iberdrola’s main strategy was to curate very specific educational content for employees based on their role, location, and job requirements. The LinkedIn team provided further support through content mapping. The objective from the very beginning was to help guide the employees along their learning paths. Specific courses were assigned and recommended to individuals so they could quickly find and engage with the content that aligned with their business and learning objectives.

LinkedIn Learning proved to be a great success for Iberdrola. Thanks to a phased rollout, detailed planning, and curated learning paths, employees recorded an average of 1.5 learning hours per month and a repeat monthly learner rate of 60%.
